Sequels . . .

Io9.com, had an article on sequels in sci-fi and horror.

In
the last nine years there's been a big increase in what percentage of
the science fiction and fantasy lit market are sequels – and the spike
started in the late 90's and then leveled off – but did not decrease. 
If you think I'm going to state it and not do an analysis, you really
don't know me that well.

Why do I think this is? And what does it mean for progeeks in writing and lit?
